Key Government Spending Announcements
The Chancellor did meet her commitment that there would be no major tax announcements but tax is only one side of the equation. The other is spending, and the Spring Statement confirmed a number of measures, namely:
- National security: Defence spending will increase to 2.5% of GDP by 2027, with an extra £2.2 billion for the Ministry of Defence next year.
- Reform: Welfare changes aim to save £4.8 billion by 2029/30, including freezing Universal Credit health elements and boosting standard allowances above inflation.
- Growth: £2 billion for affordable housing and £625 million for construction skills to support 1.5 million new homes and 60,000 skilled workers this Parliament.
There were also announcements about the rollout of the Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax project.
